When do you meet?
We meet every Tuesday and Saturday morning (weather-permitting), from 10am to around 1pm. Some of us are able to do both days, but many just go to one, due to work and other commitments.

Do I have to come every week?
Not at all! That’s the joy of volunteering with us. We all have busy lives, so we are delighted to see you whenever you can make it.

Where do you meet?
We meet PROMPTLY at 10am at The Red Lady tomb inside Warriston Cemetery. See the map for more details. Once we have gathered, we quickly move on to the shed to pick up tools, and then get to work elsewhere in the cemetery, so it’s important that everyone arrives on time.

How long does it last?
About three hours, depending on the weather. We always stop for a break at 11am (snacks are provided!) and you are free to leave at any time!

Which bus routes are nearby?
We are well-served by the 8, 9, 23 & 27 buses on Inverleith Row, and the 14 and 21 buses on Ferry Road.

Is there parking?
Yes – volunteers should park inside the cemetery gates – you’ll see a couple of cars parked near the Red Lady so just park behind them. We also have dedicated bike racks too.

Are there public toilets at Warriston?
No, unfortunately we don’t have any public toilets.

What should I wear?
Sturdy clothes and footwear that you don’t mind getting a little dirty on occasion. We typically wear hiking boots, old trousers and long-sleeved t-shirts and fleeces. Just be aware that you will be working outside, so depending on the weather you may need warm gloves, hat, jacket, etc. Your feet may get wet during the winter months, so unless it’s warm and sunny, trainers are not advised.

Do I need my own tools?
No! We have a shed full of tools. Unless you have a favourite tool that you prefer to work with.

Is there training?
During your induction we will walk you through what you should and shouldn’t do, what to look out for, how to handle tools, general health and safety, etc. If in doubt, ask!

What should I bring?
Work gloves! We do have some spares, but you will probably want to have your own pair. You will want something that protects you from bramble thorns and nettle stings, and that keeps your hands clean in general. You may also want a water bottle and/or flask of tea or coffee for our 11am break. We have a box of snacks to share with everyone, and individuals have been known to bring a homemade cake on occasion too.

What happens if there is bad weather?
If we know that bad weather is coming (including strong winds) we will cancel ahead of time, either the night before or at 9am. If there is a surprise heavy rain shower while we are already on site, we usually call it a day.

I’m not necessarily the fittest or strongest person, but I still want to help. What can I do?
We have lots of outdoor jobs for a wide range of interests and physical abilities. Gentle cleaning of graves, simple weeding, trimming, etc.

How do you let us know if a volunteer session is or isn’t happening?
We send out an email to all the volunteers the day before, asking who is able to join us, so that we have an idea of numbers. If the weather is looking too bad for a session, we either notify everyone via email the night before, or by 9am on the day.

Can you accommodate corporate or Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteers?
Absolutely! Just get in touch first, so we can discuss it and set it up appropriately.
